Overview

We are seeking an experienced APAC Sales Manager to lead our institutional, consortia, and open access sales activities across the Asia Pacific region. This senior role is critical in growing and sustaining our publishing revenues in a diverse and dynamic market. You will be responsible for building strategic relationships, driving new business, and maximizing market reach and impact for the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is a not-for-profit organization and the world's leading chemistry community. We are the UK's professional body for chemical scientists with 60,000 members worldwide, 600 staff operating around the world and an award-winning global knowledge business. Since our origins in 1841 we have promoted, supported, and celebrated chemistry and we work to shape the future of the chemical sciences -- for the benefit of science and humanity. We invest our publishing surplus directly into the scientific community through education, outreach, and advocacy.

This role is contractually based in China (Beijing or Shanghai) with extensive travel throughout the Asia Pacific region expected to meet business needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute a strategic regional sales plan focused on revenue growth, market expansion, and customer retention.
  • Deliver annual sales targets for subscriptions, open access services, and related publishing products.
  • Lead and manage a team of four regional sales staff, supporting their professional development and ensuring delivery of objectives.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities with institutions, consortia, and other partners across the Asia Pacific region.
  • Cultivate high-level relationships with libraries, funders, consortia, and other stakeholders to support both subscription and open access revenue models.
  • Drive the negotiation and renewal of open access agreements that support the RSC's goals and revenue targets.
  • Oversee the management of third-party agents in the region, ensuring effective representation in key markets.
  • Collaborate with publishing, marketing, and product teams to support regional campaigns and new services.
  • Represent the RSC at conferences, industry events, and institutional meetings as a knowledgeable ambassador.
  • Provide market intelligence and strategic insight to inform pricing, product development, and future planning.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Strong track record of sales growth in an academic or scholarly publishing environment.
  • Proven experience managing complex accounts, consortia agreements, and delivering results through team leadership.
  • Experience in open access publishing models, including APC-based sales and open access agreements.
  • Sound knowledge of the research landscape and scholarly communication systems in Asia Pacific.
  • Experience working with or managing third-party sales agents and representatives.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and relationship management skills.
  • Comfortable working with sales targets and using CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce) to manage pipelines.
  • Willingness to travel across the APAC region and occasionally internationally.
  • Fluency in English; proficiency in additional regional languages is an advantage.
